Services

Carolyn Prince – Teacher and Tutor offers a number of services and supports to middle and high school students, college students and adults. Services include: Homeschool Supplemental Teaching, 1-1 Tutoring, Executive Function Coaching, Short Courses, Gifted Extension, Education Professional Development and Coaching, Webinars and Resource Creation.

All 1-1 and group services deliberately incorporate structured use of mindfulness, movement, self efficacy development and executive functioning skills as a reflection of sound research in education and extensive personal experience in supporting student development.

All services are provided using Microsoft Suite products, with face to face interactions supported by Microsoft Teams. Online services allow flexibility for families with multiple demands on their times in that they can participate in tutoring, teaching programs, courses or webinars anywhere they have a computer and internet connection. This is perfect for homeschool families who undertake regular travel and for those with multiple children all engaged in different activities during and after school.

The 1-1 or small group nature of services eliminates many of the difficulties experienced by students with remote learning, in that I can see, respond to and engage with students immediately without any of the class environment demands on my attention. Furthermore, sessions are rarely derailed by the “oh, I forgot to bring that today” excuse that plagued many of my first years as an in person tutor.

Regular services are outlined below, however you are encouraged to contact Carolyn for to identify if alternative needs many be able to be supported! Please use the Contact page for details.

Homeschool Supplemental Teaching

Homeschooling is an increasingly popular means of educating children that provides highly connected curriculum in a personalised manner to support students.

Often, however, there comes a time when the needs of a student in certain areas require specialised support or attention that has to be outsourced.

Carolyn Prince – Teacher and Tutor provides dedicated, regular intervention classes for students in a 1-1, online environment in the following areas:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Grammar
  • Spelling
  • Vocabulary
  • Study Skills
  • Executive Functioning

1-1 Tutoring

English and Language Arts are multifaceted subjects that require a range of skills from students and can impact their success in almost every other subject they study at school.

Teachers every day do an incredible job of supporting the wide range of students presented to them in the inclusive classroom but sometimes individuals require more 1-1 guidance than school teachers have the capacity to provide. That is where tutoring comes in.

While teacher feedback can instruct students on WHAT they are doing wrong, personalised tutoring is directed at identifying WHY it is going wrong and HOW it can be corrected.

Support can be provided around writing, reading, grammar, study and test preparation as well as analytical skills for engaging with poetry, novels and non-fiction texts.

Short Courses

Areas of particular interest or need for students can be met in many ways, one of which is participation in short courses. These allow individuals to gain more knowledge and practice while establishing genuine motivation and direction.

Short courses involve attending 2-3 lessons per week over a 3-4 week period, where all learning revolves around a central concept.

Unlike other services, short courses can be delivered to individuals OR small groups of up to 4 students, and are therefore perfect for learning pods or various teams seeking focused guidance.

Courses can be designed around most topics with notice, however the following reflect courses available at any time throughout the year with minimal notice:

  • Writing Fiction
  • Essay Writing
  • Public Speaking
  • Executive Function Skills
  • Working in a Team
  • Figurative Language

Gifted Support & Extension

Gifted students often experience notions of waiting and boredom, both in and out of the classroom. Giftedness is about how ones brain processes information and therefore can present differently for different students and is no guarantee of any outcome. While some are highly motivated and self-directed, others struggle to identify tasks and activities to keep them engaged.

For this reason, having a support person who can work with individuals to identify their preferences and create or identify activities, challenges and projects to enhance their strengths and develop their weaknesses can be incredibly beneficial.

This service can be provided on a regular, weekly basis, on a consultative basis or an “as needed” basis to best meet the needs of individuals, families and educators.

Having created a Gifted Education Program for my school, which I subsequently coordinated for 5 years before relocating to the US, I have extensive experience in mentoring teachers to differentiate for gifted learners, providing professional development to groups, supporting executive function skill development in students and creating learning plans for individuals and groups to enhance education engagement.

One of the hardest thing for educators of all kinds to locate is quality, relevant and accessible professional development and coaching opportunities.
